Position: Assistant or Associate Professor

Virginia Tech's Department of Building Construction (BC) in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies (CAUS) is seeking candidates to fill a tenure-track faculty position commencing Spring 2010 or Fall 2010. The position is an academic year appointment and is open to applicants who would qualify for appointment at the rank of assistant professor or associate professor.

The successful candidate is expected to have a strong commitment and expectation to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, within the Department's unique vertically integrated curriculum. In concert with teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate is expected to be productive in research and service engagement.

Applicants may have the opportunity to engage in summer teaching or participate in summer faculty industry fellowships. Applicants are expected to make a significant and lasting impact through outstanding contributions to research and scholarship. Applicants with expertise in leading edge construction areas and building science topics are especially welcome to apply; construction-related work experience is a plus.

The successful applicant will be appointed in the Department of Building Construction and is expected to interact with and participate in the Myers-Lawson School of Construction at Virginia Tech. As such the successful candidate will have the opportunity to join a critical mass of faculty and students who work across traditional boundaries, share learning environments and create a unified identity for excellence in construction education, research and engagement. The Department of Building Construction and the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Virginia Tech combine their construction expertise to participate with the Myers-Lawson School of Construction. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work with established centers and initiatives at Virginia Tech. Among these are the Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science (www.ictas.vt.edu), the Institute for Society, Culture, and Environment (www.isce.vt.edu), the Virginia Center for Housing Research (www.vchr.vt.edu) and the Center for Innovation in Construction Safety and Health (www.csc.eng.vt.edu).  

Required Qualifications:

  1. Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching, research, scholarship and engagement.
  2. Interest and excellence in teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
  3. Ability to articulate a coherent agenda of research or scholarship and to identify potential funding sources to support such research.
  4. Effective communication skills.
  5. The ability and willingness to work collaboratively with core and primary faculty members of Myers-Lawson School of Construction.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience in working with students including overseeing student internships or service-learning activities.
  2. Interest and experience working effectively with a diverse student population.
  3. Interest in working with established centers and initiatives at Virginia Tech.
  4. Substantive international and/or national construction experience.
  5. Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines.
  6. Interest and willingness to support the vision and mission of MLSOC (www.mlsoc.vt.edu) as they relate to Values Based Leadership, Creative Learning and Research Environments, and Integrating and Sustaining the Built Environment. 

Education:

  1. Ph.D. preferred
  2. Candidates working on a degree program are expected to have completed the program prior to starting.
