The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE) at Arizona State University (ASU) and the Del E. Webb School of Construction (DEWSC) within the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) seek applications for a career track faculty position in the field of heavy/civil construction management. The School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE), one of the eight Fulton Schools, houses a vibrant construction management and technology and construction engineering research and teaching community, comprising a group of faculty members who are leaders in all aspects of construction. The candidate will primarily fulfill teaching responsibilities in the area of Heavy/Civil Construction.  The position is aimed at advancing the construction management and engineering programs with an explicit goal of enhancing the reputation, stature, and student enrollment in the area of heavy civil/construction. 

As part of fulfilling instructional duties, the selected candidate will have the opportunity and is expected to be involved in: 

• Teaching heavy/civil construction and closely related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels both in-person and online 
• Developing new courses and curricula, and improving existing courses, with an emphasis on heavy civil/construction 
• Advising student organizations and mentoring student competition teams 
• Engaging with the local and national heavy/civil construction industry and professional associations 

The position is expected to cover foundational learning at the lower division (first-year and sophomore) and specialized learning at the upper division (junior and senior) of the construction programs.  Depending on qualifications and rank, the position may also have obligations to teach graduate level courses in the heavy/civil construction area.

Professional engineering licensure or the ability to obtain registration in a timely manner is desirable. 

Successful candidates will support the mission of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and are expected to advance instructional endeavors both within and beyond the Fulton Schools. The selected candidate will be associated with the Del E. Webb School of Construction within the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE). SSEBE offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Civil, Environmental, Sustainable, and Construction Engineering, and in Construction Management and Technology.  SSEBE has 60 faculty members, 1450 undergraduate and 750 graduate students, and generates annual research expenditures of nearly $30 million per year. 

Appointment will be made at the rank of Professor of Practice, Associate Teaching Professor, or Assistant Teaching Professor commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications. The anticipated start date is August 2024, but accommodations can be made for the selected candidate. Appointment at Professor of Practice or Associate Teaching Professor ranks will require a candidate to have considerable experience in construction management or construction engineering education, a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical innovation, and an ability to maintain and expand the Del E. Webb School of Construction’s industry partnerships.  In addition to building strong collaborations with existing faculty within the DEWSC, the candidate will be expected to build strong collaborations with other groups in SSEBE as well as entities within FSE and across ASU. 

Required Qualifications: 

• Master’s or PhD degree in construction management, construction engineering, civil engineering, or a closely related field 
• Demonstrated ability to develop strong ties with the heavy civil/construction industry  
• Five years of heavy civil/construction industry experience 
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

Desired Qualifications: 

• PhD in construction management, construction engineering, civil engineering, or a closely related field 
• Ten or more years of heavy civil/construction industry experience 
• Leadership experience in the heavy civil/construction industry 
• Teaching experience in undergraduate construction management, construction engineering, or civil engineering 
• Evidence of teaching experience in professional training courses, seminars, peer-groups, and other non-traditional educational offerings 
• Registered professional engineer (PE), Certified Professional Contractor (CPC), Certified Construction Manager (CCM), or other recognized construction industry certification
