Professor (all ranks) in Construction Management and Technology or Construction Engineering

The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE) at Arizona State University (ASU) and the Del E. Webb School of Construction (DEWSC) within the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE) seek applications for one or more tenured or tenure-track faculty positions in the fields of construction management and technology or construction engineering. The School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment (SSEBE), one of the eight Fulton Schools, houses a vibrant construction management and technology and construction engineering research and teaching community, comprising a group of faculty members who are leaders in all aspects of construction. 

Candidates will have a PhD in construction management, construction engineering, civil engineering with a construction emphasis, or other closely related field, with research and scholarly focus on one or more of the following topics: 

  • innovations in technologies and construction methods (e.g., robotics & modularization, construction process optimization, etc.) 
  • data analytics & systems modeling for construction applications  
  • advanced and/or integrated project delivery 
  • decarbonization of new and/or existing facilities 
  • industrialization of construction 
  • innovations in safety and risk management 
  • resilient and sustainable construction  

The individual will complement and align with the skills and portfolios of existing construction management and construction engineering faculty in the Del E. Webb School of Construction.  

As part of its New American University imperatives, ASU seeks candidates whose research addresses critical infrastructure challenges with a focus on sustainability and resilience. We seek applicants who will contribute to our academic programs, promote transdisciplinary teaching and research, and help the university to achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, valuing entrepreneurship, and conducting use-inspired research. Faculty members in the Fulton Schools are expected to develop and maintain an internationally-recognized and externally-funded research program; adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of in-person and online graduate and undergraduate courses; supervise both undergraduate and graduate student design and research projects; and undertake service activities, (e.g., advising student organizations and mentoring student competition teams). Professional engineering licensure or the ability to obtain registration in a timely manner is desirable. 

Successful candidates will support the mission of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and are expected to participate in interdisciplinary research and teaching endeavors both within and beyond the Fulton Schools. Although the tenure home may be in any of the Fulton Schools, the Del E. Webb School of Construction (DEWSC) within the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment is currently the most involved in the interest areas of the search. SSEBE offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Civil, Environmental, Sustainable, and Construction Engineering, and in Construction Management and Technology.  SSEBE has 60 faculty members, 1,450 undergraduate students and 750 graduate students and generates annual research expenditures of nearly $30 million per year. 

This search is part of ASU’s engagement with the Arizona’s New Economy Initiative (NEI), a bold effort to ensure that Arizona leads the new economy that will rely on engineering, computing, and technology to drive sustainable growth, resilience, and opportunities for all. Appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments. The anticipated start date is August 2024, but accommodations can be made for the selected candidate. Appointment at associate or full professor level will require a candidate to have considerable experience in construction management or construction engineering education, a demonstrated commitment to scholarship and research, and an ability to maintain and expand the Del E. Webb School of Construction’s research capabilities.  In addition to building strong collaborations with existing faculty within the DEWSC, the candidate will be expected to build strong collaborations with other groups in SSEBE as well as entities within FSE and across ASU.  

Required Qualifications: 

  • Ph.D. in construction management, construction engineering, civil engineering with a construction emphasis, or other closely related field 
  • Research and scholarly focus on construction management and technology and construction engineering 
  • Demonstrated evidence of research capability and commitment to teaching excellence as appropriate to the candidate’s rank 
  • Demonstrated evidence of ability to procure sponsored research and generate scholarly articles in the interest areas of the search, as appropriate to the candidate’s rank  
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and aptitude for collaboration and teambuilding 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • Professional engineering (PE) licensure, CPC, PMP, LEED GA, or other professional certifications, or the ability to obtain registration in a timely manner 
  • Five years of construction industry experience 
  • Prior undergraduate teaching experience in a construction management or engineering program 

For associate and full professor candidates 

  • Demonstrated record of publishing scholarly articles in reputed journals 
  • Demonstrated record of securing external funding for research programs 
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in teaching that incorporates active learning 
  • Familiarity with ACCE and/or ABET accreditation processes
