2024 ASC Lifetime Achievement Award

Professor Lori Brown

The Associated Schools of Construction is honored to name Professor Lori Brown as the 2024 Recipient of the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award.

Professor Brown taught at California State University, Chico for 32 years, and retired in December 2022. She is the master of “firsts” in the ASC, her achievements include being the first female recipient of this prestigious award.

Professor Brown has been instrumental in the success of ASC and has been involved in a wide variety of activities to further the organization.  She served as Region 7 Director from 2005 to 2011, at the end of her term she was elected as the 2nd Vice President of ASC.  Lori served in that role for two years, then as 1st VP.  Because the President of ASC resigned, Lori graciously stepped in early and served as President for three years.  She was also the first woman to serve as the President of ASC and is an inspiration to all faculty in ASC.

One of the most impressive feats Lori has accomplished in her time with ASC has been the growth and success of the ASC Region 6/7 Student Competitions in Sparks, NV.  Lori first served as the Competition Director for that event while she was Region 7 Director.  She has served in that role ever since and has grown that event into the largest construction education student competition in the world.  She not only organizes an annual event that has well over 1,500 student attendees and 1,250 construction industry members attending, but she has raised millions of dollars to provide a world-class experience for everyone that attends.  All of the success of this event can be directly tied to Lori’s passion, dedication, and countless hours of work.  As stated by Justin Weidman (Region 6 Director) and Hongtao Dang (Region 7 Director), “Despite the demands of these positions, Lori always has led with integrity, honesty, and passion.  She is a role model to all who worked alongside her, setting a high bar for those who would follow in her footsteps.”

As if all of these contributions weren’t enough, Lori has also been a driving force for the Mechanical/Electrical Academic Consortium (MEAC) Boot Camp that ASC hosts each year.  She has been the lone faculty member teaching the electrical components of this course, helping hundreds of faculty members learn how to effectively teach electrical systems, estimating, and project management.  She freely hands out all of her course materials and is always giving of her time to answer questions and help faculty rise as better educators.

Marie Patterson, her colleague at California State University, Chico stated “It has been an absolute pleasure to learn from and work with Lori over the years.  Her dedication and contributions to construction management education, the construction profession, and ASC are greater than what I know of and could include in this letter, but hopefully this provides a glimpse of her impact.  I cannot think of any other faculty that has contributed to the extent that she has, and it is my pleasure to recommend her for the ASC Lifetime Achievement Award.”
